Fashion designer Max Tan from Singapore, playing with contrasts

Serious, but never severe, minimalist, but never simple, fragile, but never weak, androgynous, but never masculine. The underlying DNA of Max Tan, designer from Singapore with very clear ideas and founder of the homonymous label, can be defined with this contradistinction of adjectives. His elegantly informal garments are for an "alternative and quiet" lifestyle. Among Max Tan's latest appearances is the Fashion Festival in Singapore, which took place from May 16 to 20. The designer's creations took to the runway in sheer, light fabrics that contrasted with rigid details such as the pockets or closing clasps, consistent with the play on opposites that has made his style so unique. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Nanyang in 2006 with a degree in Fashion Design, Max Tan debuted his first collection at Singapore Fashion Week 2007, coming in second at its Young Designer competition. Since then he's been consistently creating one-off pieces and capsule collections to meet the increasing demand for his designs throughout the world. Photos via max-tan.com
