We've been keeping an eye on him since 2010. On him and on his fun illustration-doodles that so remind us of "Where's Wally?". You look at them and your gaze gets lost in the intricate details or hidden characters. Today Jonathan returns to the fray with a series of essential drawings, reduced to just a few lines and geometric forms that dance around compositional magic.
The elements are the same that have accompanied him in all his adventures: fonts, characters, colors and positive messages, hidden behind a thick forest, disconcerting but never closed off. This time though, Jonathan puts the focus on individual components and shows us their inner density. With one purpose: to find the most essential form that would allow everyone to reproduce the creative idea with minimum effort.
For Calugi doodling is an obsessive, aesthetic and narrative gesture. A trip that opens the doors onto many worlds in which observers can find their routes. Multilayered storytelling as some experts call it. We try to explain it as follows: imagine a letter and a book. Which of the two can more easily capture a world? For Calugi, if you somewhat know him, the challenge is to write it with a single letter. Simplicity is complexity, and vice versa.
