Born in the Netherlands and raised in New Zealand, Sabine Marcelis now lives and works in Rotterdam. One of the most talented young designers in her generation, she already has long collaborations with top brands like Isabel Marant and Céline in her résumé and a series – “Dawn Lights” – on display at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum.
Her “Equals Easy Chair” is made up of two elements: a block of resin and a plate of tempered steel. The former gives the structure stability, contrasting the latter in a game of joints and balances between shapes, mass and lightness. Marcelis’s design research focuses on innovative materials and new techniques, yielding pieces that are an essential, ideal combination of form and function.
