Vala: a floating sauna in the Soomaa Natural Park

The Estonian Academy of Arts has created the first floating wooden sauna in the world, installed at the Soomaa National Park, in Estonia – an area of difficult weather conditions where students of the International Summer School program had to consider a number of constraints to design the structure so it would be both functional and eco-friendly.

Named “Vala” (meaning “to pour”), the project is inspired by the rainwater that falls from saunas’ ceiling and is used for showering. The element of water is definitely crucial in the initiative, which combines interior design, architecture and goals to preserve and enhance the local territory. Students were asked to design a space dedicated to wellbeing, but which could also highlight the beauty of the Natural Park, famous for its unique landscapes.
